Hungary welcomes the significant steps taken by Armenia and Azerbaijan towards peace. This was stated by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Peter Szijjarto, at his joint news conference with the visiting Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ararat Mirzoyan.

"If we don't find peaceful means, the world will soon approach the third world war. Unfortunately, the Caucasus region has witnessed conflicts in recent years that have caused suffering to the people of the region. Our goal is to contribute to peace. This applies also to the South Caucasus. We welcome the significant steps taken by Armenia and Azerbaijan towards peace, to ensure sustainable peace in the region. Hungary would like to contribute to peace efforts," the Hungarian FM assured.

Szijjarto reminded that after a long break, Armenia and Hungary came to resume diplomatic relations, and last year they took steps to develop their economic relations, as a result of which an agreement and a program on economic cooperation were signed, on the basis of which a working group will be created. Its task will be to speed up the development of economic ties between Armenia. An increase in trade and an increase in the activities of Hungarian companies in Armenia have already been recorded, and direct flights between the capitals of the two countries will be launched in July.

The Hungarian FM said that 180 million forints will be provided in phases to "Armenian families starting a new life" in Armenia. He referred to the Armenians who were forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, but for some reason he avoided noting Nagorno-Karabakh.

Also, 1,200 Armenian children and their parents will spend their vacation in Hungary, and Armenia’s university students will be given a scholarship, Szijjarto said. According to him, 2 billion forints will be allocated to Hungary’s Armenian community, consisting of 4,200 persons, for the preservation of Armenian culture and identity.

"On the eve of Hungary's chairmanship in the EU, Budapest has prepared an agenda for Armenia-EU partnership and plans to start a dialogue on [visa regime] liberalization, and hopes that the processes will be successful," added the Hungarian FM.
