The chairperson of the Federation Council of Russia, Valentina Matviyenko, did not send a letter to the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia. The letter was sent to me by Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, with the content of whether the Armenian parliament shares the opinion expressed by the President of the National Assembly of Armenia, and whether it corresponds to the position of the citizens of Armenia. Sargis Khandanyan, an MP of the ruling majority Civil Contract Faction and Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, told this to reporters on Friday.

"I considered it illogical to answer this question, as when the President of the National Assembly represents the parliament of Armenia, he also represents the content. It is obvious that the answer to this question is ‘yes.’ The expressed idea reflects at least the position of the ruling majority," emphasized the Armenian MP.

Khandanyan said that in his reply letter, he noted the principles by which the Armenian authorities are guided in terms of protecting Armenia's interests, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

"I expressed concern about the rhetoric of a number of Russian parliamentarians, which is not based on the interests of the peoples of Armenia and Russia, who are bound by age-old friendship," he noted.

At the Spain Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments, Alen Simonyan, the speaker of the NA of Armenia, had stated, in particular, that considering that "the core of the conference is Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East," he wants to confirm that Armenia "resolutely supports the territorial integrity Ukraine, as well as Moldova, Georgia, Cyprus, and all other countries." And this statement had caused concern to the Russian side.
